A medieval chess piece bought for £5 is expected to fetch £1m at auction. A family has now been told to their surprise that the chess piece their grandfather bought in 1964 is a missing treasure, one of the long-lost Lewis Chessmen. A Sotheby's expert Alexander Kader said that his “jaw dropped” when he realised what the piece was.

Milk thief stung as victim adds urine to the mix

A man in St Ives got his revenge on a milk thief by urinating into a bottle and leaving it on his doorstep. IT worker Damon Hudson, 25, did not want to involve police when a thief kept swiping the milk from his doorstep. So he added fish oil and his own urine to one bottle, and watched as the milk thief took it. He said: “Hopefully that’s the end. The weirdo deserves it.”

Unexploded object turns out to be Christmas decoration

An object assumed to be an unexploded device on the River Thames turned out to be a Christmas decoration. The Metropolitan Police said that officers were called to Wapping in east London after the spherical item washed up on the shore of the London river. “Luckily, upon closer inspection, it is a giant glittery Christmas bauble!” police said.
