WINDSOR, TUESDAY: The Queen gives a speech at Windsor Castle in honour of Ireland’s president Michael D Higgins, who this week made the first state visit by a president of the republic since it gained independence.

BERLIN, TUESDAY: Ecological activists carry a giant head of Chancellor Angela Merkel ahead of a protest against reforms to the Renewable Energy Sources Act in Germany.

PRETORIA, THURSDAY: Oscar Pistorius leaves court. The South African Olympic and Paralympic athlete, who denies deliberately murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, has faced a tough cross-examination this week.

RWANDA, MONDAY: Ushers carry a distraught woman out of a stadium in Kigali during the 20th anniversary commemoration of the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Thousands of Rwandans and global leaders joined together to remember the atrocity, in which more than 800,000 people were killed in just 100 days.

LONDON, TUESDAY: Maria Miller leaves 10 Downing Street after a weekly cabinet meeting. She subsequently resigned from her role as culture secretary following a row over her expenses.

NAIROBI, WEDNESDAY: A man tries to put out a fire in the Deep Sea slum in Nairobi.

LONDON, TUESDAY: Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu saves a free kick from Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea nevertheless won the Champions League match 2-0.
