Aguero, Eriksen, Sanchez and Ozil star in team of the week

After a record-breaking weekend in the Premier League, two clubs have lost their managers and Sergio Aguero has rocketed to the top of the goalscoring charts after his exploits against Newcastle.

After eight games of the season the table is starting to take shape with Manchester City back on top of the table, and Arsenal and United in second and third.

However, the sight of Crystal Palace, Leicester and West Ham in the European places is something of a surprise as is Chelsea's dire situation. The defending champions are down in 16th, ten points off the leaders and facing a fight to get back to the top four.

So who were the stars of the show this weekend? Here's The Week's pick of the experts' picks:

Goalkeeper: Heurelho Gomes (Watford)

The former Spurs keeper became a figure of fun at White Hart Lane, but "the Brazilian has developed into a solid Premier League goalkeeper" says Sports Mole. He was at "his very best to help the Hornets claim a point away at Bournemouth, with his most notable contribution being the penalty save to deny Glenn Murray".

Defence: Glen Johnson (Stoke), Jeffrey Schlupp (Leicester City), Ramiro Funes Mori (Everton), Jose Fonte (Southampton)

There were any number of candidates for a role at the back this week, but these four get the nod. Glen Johnson was the highest scoring defender in Fantasy Premier League and also impressed the Sports Mole panel. Schlupp of Leicester got on the scoresheet in a 2-1 victory over Norwich. "The Ghana international was a constant menace to the Canaries and his goal was nothing less than he deserved," says Garth Crooks of the BBC.

Funes Mori looked the part in Everton's 1-1 draw with Liverpool. The Belfast Telegraph describes him as a "derby debutant who excelled in what was only his second Premier League start for the club". Saints defender Fonte is also in the team. "There were heroic performances all round in Southampton's stunning 3-1 win at Chelsea, but Jose Fonte was calmness personified in the heart of their defence," says ESPN.

Midfield: Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil (both Arsenal), Kevin de Bruyne (Man City), Christian Eriksen (Spurs)

Arsenal's midfield maestros may have different approaches to the game, but they ripped into Man United on Sunday. "Sanchez was outstanding last week against Leicester and even better this week against Manchester United. His first goal was exquisite, while his second was the most wonderful strike," says Garth Crooks of the BBC. His colleague Ozil "tore Louis van Gaal's men to shreds inside 20 minutes and this is what he was bought to do; win big games", drools ESPN.

De Bruyne was overshadowed in Man City's 6-1 win over Newcastle, but he was "superb", says the Belfast Telegraph. "The hefty fee City paid for him becomes more and more understandable with each performance at the moment." Eriksen scored twice for Spurs in their 2-2 draw with Swansea and "outlined his importance" to the Londoners, says Caughtoffside.

Attack: Sergio Aguero (Man City), Sadio Mane (Southampton)

After his astonishing five-goal scoring spree Sergio Aguero is a shoo-in for this week's selection. He was worth 25 points in Fantasy Premier League and his performance underlined his status as "one of the very best strikers in world football", says Caughtoffside.

Alongside him was Mane of Southampton who was "utterly ruthless in exposing Chelsea's defensive frailties" as the Saints recorded a stunning victory over the champions, says ESPN.
