Jon Stewart started out Monday night's Daily Show by noting that Democrats from President Obama on down are on record as deploring the corruptive influence of money on politics — and then criticizing Democrats from Obama on down for raising and spending a lot of money on the upcoming midterm elections. "Here's a tip: It may undercut your message when you're condemning a thing that you have clearly mastered," Stewart said. It's like saying "Thou shalt not kill — but if you're going to...."

Soon, though, it becomes clear that Stewart might have a personal stake in this critique. Presidential fundraisers at Gwyneth Paltrow's house are one thing, but the Democrats' fundraising emails are too much, he said, exasperation evident in his voice. Stewart showed his audience a series of increasingly bizarre, despondent, and slightly creepy messages from various Democratic groups asking for his money. "These emails are just embarrassing at this point," he said. The segment ends with a strange conversation with a giant emoji. Couldn't Stewart just click "Unsubscribe"? --Peter Weber
