After days of fighting and months of airstrikes, Iraqi security forces took control of several government buildings in central Ramadi on Sunday, a military spokesman said.

Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province in western Iraq, has been held by the Islamic State since May, when its fighters overran the city as Iraqi troops fled. An Iraqi military spokesman said the government complex "is in our hands," and the militants that remained in the area either fled or were killed. Over the past several months, Iraqi forces have gradually retaken parts of the city, with ISIS using car bombs, snipers, and land mines to slow the military's progress.
