Singer and guitarist Glenn Frey, a founding member of the Eagles, died Monday of complications from rheumatoid arthritis, pneumonia, and acute ulcerative colitis in New York City, the band announced in a statement. He was 67.
"Words can neither describe our sorrow, nor our love and respect for all that he has given to us, his family, the music community, and millions of fans worldwide," the band said. The Eagles were scheduled to participate in the 2015 Kennedy Center Honors, but asked that their award presentation be postponed until later this year because of a "recurrence of previous intestinal issues" for Frey that required "major surgery and a lengthy recovery period," the band said.
The Eagles have sold more than 120 million albums and received six Grammy Awards. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. Before the Eagles reunited in 1994, Frey released a successful solo album, No Fun Aloud, in 1982.
