If it's any consolation to the Bay Area, it seems that it is simply not in the stars for regular-season record-holders to win titles in any of the four major American professional sports. While the Golden State Warriors set the NBA regular season win record with a stunning 73 victories this year, their loss in the Finals to the Cleveland Cavaliers puts them in rather depressing company.

In the NFL, the 2007-08 Patriots lost the Super Bowl despite a win record of 16-0. The 2001 Mariners, who hold the MLB record of 116-46, only made it as far as the league championship series. Even the Red Wings lost in the NHL Western Conference final in 1995-96, despite going 62-13-7 in the regular season.
