North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory (R) has decided to drop his lawsuit against the federal government over his state's controversial HB2 law, which requires individuals to use the bathroom that corresponds with their biological sex. In a motion filed Friday, McRory formally requested a "voluntary dismissal" of the case, which was prompted by the government's threat to withhold educational funding from North Carolina because the HB2 law violated the Civil Rights Act and Title IX.

McRory cited "substantial costs" as the reason for the dismissal, though said he would still fight to keep the law if necessary; the Department of Justice's counter-suit against the state is still pending. North Carolina has lost more than $100 million as a result of the law, including losing the rights to host planned events for the NBA and NCAA.
