Toronto Blue Jays beat Baltimore Orioles on walk-off homer, advance to ALDS
On Tuesday in Toronto, the Baltimore Orioles fell to the home-town Blue Jays in the American League wild-card game after a massive walk-off home run from designated hitter Edwin Encarnación. Encarnación's dinger came in the bottom of the 11th inning and soared approximately 440 feet, good for three runs to give the Blue Jays the 5-2 win:
Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista scored first in the game, putting Toronto up 1-0 in the bottom of the second, before Orioles outfielder Mark Trumbo put Baltimore up with a two-run homer in the top of the fourth. The Blue Jays tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth, setting the stage for the extra innings and Encarnación's emphatic at-bat.
The game was momentarily marred by a fan who threw a can of beer at Orioles outfielder Hyun Soo Kim while Kim was fielding a fly ball in the bottom of the seventh. After the game, Orioles center-fielder Adam Jones said of the fan's conduct: "That's about as pathetic as it gets." The can landed just a few feet from Kim's head; Kim successfully fielded the ball, but said after the game, "Something like today should never happen." Blue Jays manager John Gibbons also condemned the fan's actions.
