London mayor says Americans fleeing Trump are welcome in his city

Americans looking to flee the United States after Donald Trump's surprise Election Day victory have a home in London, the city's mayor said Wednesday.

"Millions of people, I'm told, used Google's search engine [after] the election on Tuesday — we know millions use it every single day," London Mayor Sadiq Khan said. "I heard one of the most googled things since Wednesday has been 'how do you emigrate?' If talented people based in the U.S. want to come here to London, my message is simple: London is open."

Khan is London's first Muslim mayor and has long been an outspoken critic of Trump. "Sadiq has spent his whole life fighting extremism, but Trump's remarks make that fight much harder for us all — it plays straight into the extremists' hands and makes both our countries less safe," a spokesperson for Khan said in May. Trump, for his part, has blasted Khan for making "very rude statements" and challenged the mayor to an IQ test.

While many Americans have also explored the option of fleeing to Canada, Khan assured desperate travelers: "Our website's not going to crash."
