House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) is steadily improving after being shot in the hip last week and is now in "fair condition," MedStar Washington Hospital Center said Wednesday. Scalise was shot last Wednesday morning at a Republican congressional baseball team practice in Alexandria, Virginia, and arrived at the hospital in "critical condition."
He suffered fractured bones, internal bleeding, and extensive damage to his internal organs after being shot, but he "continues to make good progress," the hospital said. He is now "beginning an extended period of healing and rehabilitation."
Scalise's lead surgeon said Friday that the congressman will likely remain in the hospital for a "considerable period of time," perhaps "weeks."
