Judge Brett Kavanaugh, President Trump's pick for the Supreme Court, said on Monday night he is "deeply honored" to be the nominee chosen to fill retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy's seat.
Kavanaugh, flanked by his wife, Ashley, and daughters Margaret and Liza, first praised Trump, saying that "no president has ever consulted more widely or talked with more people for more backgrounds to seek input about a Supreme Court nomination."
Kavanaugh, a 53-year-old D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals judge, said before confirmation hearings he will meet with and "tell each senator that I revere the Constitution," and he believes "that an independent judiciary is the crown jewel of our constitutional republic. If confirmed by the Senate, I will keep an open mind in every case and I will always strive to preserve the Constitution of the United States and the American rule of law."
