Gretchen Whitmer won the Democratic nomination for Michigan governor on Tuesday night, while Bill Schuette, the state's attorney general, won the Republican nomination.
Gov. Rick Snyder (R) is leaving office due to term limits. Schuette defeated Lt. Gov. Brian Calley, state Sen. Patrick Colbeck, and Dr. Jim Hines, while Whitmer, a former legislative leader, was victorious over businessman Shri Thanedar and former Detroit health director Abdul El-Sayed. The Democratic Party views the Michigan governorship as a top target this November.
