Here's what the FBI has confirmed about the suspicious packages
A slew of suspicious packages addressed to current and former government officials, namely Democrats, dominated the news on Wednesday. Here's what the FBI is sharing about the situation, per a statement released Wednesday afternoon:
- "Between October 22 and 24, ... suspicious packages were received at multiple locations in the New York and Washington, D.C., areas and Florida."
- They were addressed to liberal philanthropist George Soros, former President Barack Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former CIA Director John Brennan "care of CNN," and former Attorney General Eric Holder
- Holder's package arrived at the return address of "Debbie Wasserman Shultz," a misspelling of the former Democratic National Committee Chairwoman's name. All the packages had this return address
- The FBI's lab in Quantico, Virginia, will analyze the packages
- Investigation is ongoing and in conjunction with a variety of federal, state, and local government agencies
- There may be more packages out there
- All of the packages were in bubble wrap-lined manila envelopes that looked like this:
A picture of the CNN-directed package revealed a return address of Wasserman Schultz's (D-Fla.) Sunrise, Florida office. In an earlier press conference, the NYPD and FBI officials confirmed that package contained what appeared to be an envelope of white powder. Officials also said all the packages appeared to be from the same person, and that they contained what appeared to be live explosive devices.
Earlier reports of a package directed to Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) are not mentioned in the FBI release. The FBI is seeking information about the packages via the contact information below. Kathryn Krawczyk
