Tiffany Haddish and Awkwafina may star in the next 21 Jump Street

Tiffany Haddish and Awkwafina may be going undercover.

The two actresses are in talks to join the next 21 Jump Street movie from Sony, Collider reported Wednesday. This new movie is being described as a spin-off of the film series about undercover cops starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, which launched in 2012 as a reboot of the 1987 Johnny Depp TV show of the same name.

Haddish, Collider reports, may be a teacher in the movie, with the idea potentially being that she'd pose as the mother of the other cop who goes on the mission with her. Awkwafina looks to be circling a role, presumably as Haddish's partner, although neither actress has been confirmed, nor have any specific details about their roles.

Ever since becoming the breakout star of the comedy Girls Trip in 2017, Haddish has been on a roll, this year starring in Uncle Drew, Night School, and Nobody's Fool. She also hosted the MTV Awards in June. Awkwafina, meanwhile, starred in Crazy Rich Asians and the Ocean's Eleven prequel Ocean's Eight. Clearly, producers at Sony are big fans of both actresses, as Collider reports Sony is hoping to "rebuild its Jump Street franchise" around Haddish, and the studio is also interested in Awkwafina for its upcoming Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle sequel.

Sony had considered a crossover between 21 Jump Street and Men in Black, but those plans were abandoned in favor of this spin-off, which will be directed by Rodney Rothman (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse). Columbia Pictures President Sanford Panitch told Variety last month he was excited that the film would be told through a "female undercover cop point-of-view," adding, "We've had enough male buddy comedies."
