Eric Holder has an ideal 2020 candidate — and it's not him
Exactly one Democrat is not running for president.
A swarm of senators, more senators, and absolute wildcards continue to announce 2020 runs, but former Attorney General Eric Holder won't be joining them. The member of former President Barack Obama's administration said Monday he "won't run," instead focusing on his "fight to end gerrymandering," he wrote in an op-ed in The Washington Post.
Holder had repeatedly said he was considering a 2020 bid, and even visited Iowa last month as he neared a decision. That standard pre-presidential trip didn't sway him to run, but Holder said in his Post op-ed that he'll still "fight to elect the right Democratic president." That effort, he said, revolves largely around working with the National Democratic Redistricting Committee "to ensure that the next Democratic president is not hobbled by a House of Representatives pulled to the extremes by members from gerrymandered districts."

Holder went on to describe his ideal 2020 nominee as someone who has the "mental and physical" capacity to handle the job. That person will have to address climate change, issue "comprehensive, humane immigration reform," and "protect voting rights," Holder added. He stopped short of naming a favorite candidate, but hinted that "we must measure our candidates not by their age, but by the vitality of their ideas."
