G7 leaders agree to $20 million fund for fighting Amazon fires

Countries at the G7 summit have just reached an agreement to help fight the devastating fires in the Amazon rainforest.
French President Emmanuel Macron and Chilean President Sebastián Piñera on Monday said that the Group of Seven leaders have agreed to a $20 million fund for helping Amazon countries fight the wildfires there, as well as to start a global initiative for protecting the rainforest, The Associated Press reports.
Macron had previously teased that a deal to provide "technical and financial help" to Brazil was forthcoming, having called the fires an "international crisis." Environmentalists and researchers have said cattle ranchers and loggers are behind most of the fires, thousands of which have broken out this month.
