Two notable figures around the JFK assassination passed away this week

A second figure connected to the assassination of John F. Kennedy has died within the span of a few days.

James Leavelle, the Dallas detective who was handcuffed to Lee Harvey Oswald when he was shot in 1963, died Thursday at the age of 99, The New York Times reports. Leavelle, whose death at a Denver hospital was confirmed by his daughter, was walking with Oswald through a police station when Oswald was shot by Jack Ruby. The famous photograph of the moment, captured by a Dallas Times Herald photographer, "epitomized the horrors" of the Kennedy assassination, the Times writes.

As The Atlantic's David A. Graham points out, Leavelle's death comes only a few days after William "Tim" McIntyre, a Secret Service agent who was 30 feet away from Kennedy as he was shot, died at the age of 84, The Sahuarita Sun reports. McIntyre was assigned to the follow-up car behind Kennedy. He worked in the Secret Service under numerous presidents for 20 years, with his son telling the Sahuarita Sun he was a "man of high standards."
