Former New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi will be the new manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, ESPN reports. Girardi, who led the Yankees to a 910-710 record from 2008 to 2017, will become the Phillies' fifth manager in eight years, succeeding Gabe Kapler, who was recently fired after two underwhelming seasons.

Girardi inherits a team that hoped to contend after landing Bryce Harper before the 2019 season, but instead sputtered to an 81-81 record. The Phillies haven't made the playoffs since 2011, and last appeared in the World Series in 2009 — which they lost to Girardi's Yankees. Philadelphia's famously demonstrative fans will be sure to forgive Girardi if he can lead their underperforming Phils from the baseball wilderness.
