Carlsen vs Anand: World Chess Championship game 11

Norwegian Magnus Carlsen goes into the 11th and penultimate match of the World Chess Championship against challenger Viswanathan Anand knowing that victory will see him retain his title.

The 23-year-old held out for a draw in the tenth match of the rubber to maintain his one-point lead over the Indian Grandmaster with just two games remaining in the event in Sochi.

Seven of the ten games so far have been draws, with two wins to Carlsen and one to Anand, and the Indian now knows that another defeat will end his hopes of winning back the title. All three victories in the rubber have gone to the player using white pieces and it is Carlsen who will have that advantage in game 11. If Anand can survive the test then he will have one final chance to take the confrontation to sudden death on Tuesday, when he plays white in game 12.

The World Chess Championship consists of 12 games with a standard time control of two hours for the first 40 moves and then one hour for the next 20 moves. There is then a final 15 minute period put on the clock, which goes up by 30 seconds every time a player makes a move.

There is a prize fund of €1m which will be divided 60/40 between the winner and the runner up.
