Oxford University’s Oriel College voted to remove its statue of Cecil Rhodes following a public backlash against monuments of slave traders and imperialists. The decision came after a series of protests outside the college by supporters of the Rhodes Must Fall campaign, started by students four years ago.

Further afield, there was talk of “World War III” as Indian and Chinese soldiers clashed in the Himalayas, resulting in at least 20 deaths.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump was at the centre of an internal conflict in the US, as his administration launched a last-ditch legal bid to prevent the publication of a tell-all memoir by former national security advisor John Bolton.

Leaked excerpts from the book, titled The Room Where It Happened, include a series of damaging allegations about the president - including one that could have affected the outcome of Trump’s impeachment.

And the US leader is facing further embarrassment as a result of a separate memoir being published by a member of his own family. Mary Trump’s book is packed with “harrowing and salacious” stories about her controversial uncle, according to insiders.
