Infiniti is to unveil its new QX50 mid-size SUV concept at next week's Detroit Motor Show, introducing the first variable compression turbo (VC-Turbo) engine in a production car.
The 2.0-litre diesel engine can modulate the unit's compression ratio, which alters the movement of pistons depending on driving conditions. The company claims the technology allows the engine to drive in a similar fashion to a petrol unit while offering a diesel's level of fuel efficiency.
The concept is also expected to debut Infiniti's first efforts in autonomous driving. Systems include predictive forward-collision warning systems and active lane control, which it says will "act as a co-pilot" and maintain a high level of driver involvement for safety.

The QX50 is an evolution of the QX Sport Inspiration concept from last year's Paris Motor Show and while it takes on several design from the first car, it could be "adapted for production" at a later date, says Auto Express.
It is expected to replace the current "ageing" model in 2018 and could be the first of several new SUVs from Infiniti, Autocar reports.
In a "highly competitive sector", it will probably rival the Seat Ateca and Nissan Qashqai, the mag adds.
Infiniti has yet to announce any prices or a release date for the QX50, although more details are expected closer to its public reveal in Detroit.
