Apple has been building a gigantic new campus for its 12,000 employees since 2013 – and the Cupertino-based company has now confirmed the facility's official name.

The tech giant has revealed the new headquarters will be called 'Apple Park' and will have a visitor centre with an on-site Apple Store that's open to the public.

Tim Cook, the company's chief executive, says Steve Jobs's influence "stretched far beyond his time" and Apple Park continues his vision of the company being "the home of innovation for generations to come".

It's designed to blend in with the Californian landscape and will run "entirely on renewable energy", says Cook, making it one of the most energy-efficient buildings in the world".

Solar panels that cover the roof can generate 17 megawatts of power, transforming the tech facility into "one of the largest on-site solar energy installations in the world", the company says. It's also expected to be the world's largest ventilated buildings, with no heating or air conditioning needed for nine months of the year.

MacRumours reports that the company will call its on-site theatre the "Steve Jobs Theatre" in honour of Apple's founder, who would have turned 62 on 24 February.

Apple Park is expected to open in April, although moving all of the company's 12,000 employees could take up to six months. Construction of the outbuildings and park houses will continue throughout the summer.
