Today's front pages: A historic day as Theresa May triggers Article 50

Today's front page of The Guardian imagines the EU as a jigsaw puzzle, with the UK as missing pieces. "Today Britain steps into the unknown", it says.

The i paper takes a similar approach and has a "cut along here" line around the UK on a map of Europe.

Not content with just a front page, The Sun projected the words "Dover and out" across the legendary White Cliffs of Dover.

The Daily Mail simply states: "Freedom", putting a photo of May signing the letter triggering Article 50 next to a photo of the wife of Alexander Blackman - Marine A - following the news he will be released from prison. The paper had campaigned for the former marine.

The Daily Telegraph takes a stern approach, with a formal photo of the Prime Minister signing the letter along with her plea for Britain to unite behind Brexit.

The Times also uses the image of May and nods to its historical significance with the headline: "The eyes of history are watching."

The Daily Express and the Daily Mirror celebrated the news and reimagined the first line of May's letter.

Meanwhile the Independent uses the occasion to campaign for May to veer away from a hard Brexit
