Jaguar Land Rover has announced plans to offer electrified powertrains on all of its new models from 2020 onwards.

Dr Ralf Speth, the group’s chief executive, said: “Every new Jaguar Land Rover model line will be electrified from 2020, giving our customers even more choice.

“We will introduce a portfolio of electrified products across our model range, embracing fully electric, plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid vehicles."

That means “all new JLR models from that date will offer either a fully electric, plug-in hybrid or 48V mild hybrid option within their individual line-ups”, says Autocar.

Although electrified powertrains will be optional on all models, reports BBC News, conventional petrol and diesel engines will still be available for those not wanting an EV or hybrid car.

Professor David Bailey, a UK motoring industry expert from Aston University, told the website that the move was a “significant step” as Jaguar Land Rover had “been lagging behind” other carmakers.

Kicking off the British company’s electrified future will be the battery-powered Jaguar I-Pace, which is due to launch next year for around £55,000, according to Auto Express. This will spawn more all-electric vehicles for both the Jaguar and Land Rover brands.

Last year, Speth told Auto Express that some Jaguar Land Rover EVs could be built in Britain. However, the I-Pace is expected to be manufactured in Austria.
