Users pointed out that the wanted man, who was accused of stealing from a Blackpool restaurant, looked like Ross Geller, the character played by Schwimmer in the 1990s sitcom Friends.

The actor later posted a video spoofing the incident to “prove” he was not behind the alleged theft.

“Officers, I swear it wasn't me,” he tweeted. “As you can see, I was in New York.”

In a statement issued yesterday, Blackpool police thanked the public for their responses, and applauded their colleagues at the Metropolitan Police for the arrest.

The also gave special thanks to Schwimmer for seeing the funny side of the appeal.

The Met Police retweeted the post, saying: “Happy to help @LancsPolice #IllBeThereForYou”.
