The driver sustained minor injuries in the accident, but the impact on the animals inside the vehicle was far more severe.

According to a tweet from Nithsdale Police, 220 of the 440 sheep on board were killed.

“The road was thereafter closed for investigation and clean-up works to take place,” STV reports. It reopened at around 5.30am today.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
