Today’s back pages: Liverpool boss Klopp has cost Shrewsbury £500,000 and world champions England return to ODIs

Counting the cost

The Daily Express and the Daily Star both report on the cost to Shrewsbury Town of Liverpool fielding only a second-string team in their FA Cup fourth-round replay at Anfield this evening.

The game is not on TV and with the first-team players enjoying a winter break, the Reds have slashed ticket prices.

This means that Shrewsbury’s 45% of the gate revenue will be smaller than it might have been with normal-priced tickets.

It’s reported in the Express and Star that Shrewsbury will miss out on a £500,000 pay-day from their trip to Merseyside.

“At a club like ours every penny counts,” said Shrews gaffer Sam Ricketts. “That is the biggest disappointment - that we will lack revenue.”

The champs are back

England play their first one-day international (ODI) today since becoming world champions on that unforgettable Sunday last July, and Metro, The Daily Telegraph and the Daily Mail all give prominence to the return of the 50-over kings.

Although some of the stars of the Cricket World Cup win will be absent either through injury (Jofra Archer) or rest (Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes), the bulk of the squad will take the field against South Africa at Newlands, led by captain Eoin Morgan.

Asked if he will lead England in their defence of the title in 2023, Morgan is quoted in several papers saying: “I haven’t looked that far ahead. I’ve looked at the next two T20 World Cups and I feel in a good enough space right here and now to be able to say I’m hoping to be here for both of them.”

England play three ODIs and three Twenty20 internationals on their tour of South Africa. Today’s first ODI starts at 11am (GMT) and is live on Sky Sports.

Tuilagi’s Six Nations fears

Despite being battered by Les Bleus in Paris on Sunday, England have named an unchanged squad for Saturday’s Calcutta Cup match against Scotland.

But The Guardian claims that England are “in a land of confusion” following their 24-17 defeat to France in their Six Nations opener.

Writing in the paper former Harlequins fly-half Nick Evans believes England’s abject display in Paris was down to the “methods” of new backs coach Simon Amor. However, Evans says England shouldn’t panic but keep faith in the same players and coaches.

One change that has been forced upon England head coach Eddie Jones is a replacement for Manu Tuilagi, who has been ruled out of the Scotland game with a groin injury.

The Daily Telegraph reports that the big centre “fears” his Six Nations could be over.
