Today’s back pages: Liverpool teenagers tame the Shrews and ‘no one likes England’ says Scotland star Johnson
A round up of the sport headlines from UK newspapers on 5 February
The taming of the Shrews
“Teens tame the Shrews” is the headline in the Daily Express with the paper acclaiming Liverpool’s young guns for their 1-0 defeat of plucky minnows Shrewsbury Town in last night’s FA Cup fourth-round replay.
Jurgen Klopp had rested his first-team squad for the clash at Anfield and instead fielded a youngest-ever XI for the cup tie with seven outfield players still in their teens.
“Wish Shrew were here, Klopp?” is the headline on the back of the Daily Mirror, with the paper reporting that the match was settled by an own goal on 75 minutes from the visitors’s Ro-Shaun Williams.

The Guardian goes with “the kids are all right” but also praises Shrewsbury’s spirited performance, which included VAR disallowing a goal from Shaun Whalley when it was still scoreless.
Geordie joy
There is also coverage of some of last night’s other FA Cup replays with The Daily Telegraph reporting on an “Oxford drama” that saw Newcastle need extra-time to see off Oxford 3-2.
Allan Saint-Maximin’s spectacular strike on 116 minutes proved the winner as the Magpies reached the fifth round for the first time in 14 years.
The Daily Star finds space to report on Derby County’s 4-2 win over Northampton, which included a goal from Wayne Rooney, a victory which means that the ex-England captain is set for a reunion with former club Manchester United in the fifth round.

Johnson: no one likes England
i Sport reports on comments by Scotland centre Sam Johnson that “no one likes England”. The Australian-born star has fired the first broadside in the traditional war of words that accompany the Calcutta Cup match.
In the Six Nations rugby championship on Saturday Scotland host England in Edinburgh and Johnson is quoted in several papers, saying: “You fully respect England because of how good they are, but I don’t think anyone likes them when you’re growing up. We have the greatest respect for England because they are so good, you almost hate them for it.”
Meanwhile, The Times also devotes its back page to the eagerly-awaited Calcutta Cup clash with the headline: “Jones: beware niggly Scots”.
England head coach Eddie Jones has warned his players that Scotland’s tactics will be to get in their faces and disrupt their rhythm.
“They’re a niggly side,” said Jones. “Historically they’ve done that. That’s the way they stay in the game and they’re good at it.”
