Dier Spurs dumped out of cup

Tottenham Hotspur were left as “sick as a Parrott”, says the Daily Mirror, after being dumped out of the FA Cup last night by Norwich City on penalties.

The fifth round tie had gone to spot kicks after a 1-1 draw and the hero turned out to be Canaries keeper Tim Krul.

He saved penalties from Troy Parrott and Gedson Fernandes to take the visitors through to a quarter-final against the winners of tonight’s tie between Derby County and Manchester United.

“Krul end” is the headline on the back of the Daily Express, which, like the Mirror, went to press before news broke of Eric Dier’s extraordinary antics at the end of the shootout.

That’s left to the online versions of the papers with The Sun captioning a photo of the England defender storming the stand as “Dier-bolical”.

The paper alleges that Dier was reacting to an “altercation” in a corporate section of the stadium between Tottenham fans and the player’s brother.

Whatever the reason for his intervention, Dier is likely to be hit with a hefty fine from the FA, and his manager, Jose Mourinho, condemned his actions.

“I don’t think that belongs to the game,” said the Spurs gaffer. “I think Eric Dier did what we as professionals cannot do but when someone insults you and your family is involved, especially your younger brother.”

Holders City Serge on

Sergio Aguero makes the back pages of the Daily Mail, Daily Star, Daily Express and Metro after his goal proved the difference between holders Manchester City and Sheffield Wednesday.

In a tight FA Cup fifth-round encounter at Hillsborough, the Argentine’s 23rd goal of the season kept the Sky Blues on course for a cup treble.

The Carabao Cup is already bagged and tagged, and victory at Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie keeps them in reach of the European quarter-finals. City’s reward for beating the Owls in the FA Cup is a trip to Newcastle United.

The Daily Star also references on its back page Leicester’s 1-0 win over Birmingham in their fifth round tie.

FA Cup quarter-final draw

Ties to be played 21/22 March
