Inspiring kids to make a difference
Junior Council is a one-of-a-kind program that brings young people together to become strong voices in their community and beyond. They learn from editors and mentors at The Week Junior, the only weekly magazine in America that reports the news directly to children ages 8 to 14.
Through video calls and workshops, kids across the US discover how to develop informed opinions and turn their ideas into action. They choose topics to report on and write about, interview experts, and work together to produce articles for the magazine. Junior Council guest speakers have included Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Eli Saslow, disability activist Melissa Blake, World Wildlife Fund director Danielle Brigida, Olympic athlete Sarah Hendrickson, US congresswoman Alma Adams, and award-winning author Erin Entrada Kelly.
When their Junior Council semester is over, members have the opportunity to participate in the Junior Journalist program. They may be assigned to attend press events or conduct interviews with noteworthy people. Junior Journalists have appeared on TV to ask questions about the Covid-19 vaccine for children, interviewed actors on the red carpet at a film premiere, attended the Scripps National Spelling Bee with behind-the-scenes access to the pronouncer and winner, and spoken to former First Lady Michelle Obama about her children’s TV show, among other highlights.

Parents of Junior Council members have told The Week Junior editors that the program changed their child’s life. “When kids are respected for the intelligent and caring people they are, they rise to new levels,” one parent said, “and they meet or transcend expectations.”
