Rear-wheel drive Lamborghini Huracan Spyder unveiled in LA

A rear-wheel drive version of the Lamborghini Huracan Spyder has been revealed to the public at the 2016 Los Angeles motor show.

Until now, Lamborghini has offered the Huracan Spyder only as an all-wheel drive model, and the company says the new rear-wheel drive variant completes the "core" Huracan range.

A new, larger front air intake and redesigned back end distinguishes the rear-wheel drive Spyder from the original all-wheel drive model.

Mechanically, the rear-wheel drive Huracan Spyder is almost identical to its coupe relative. Behind the cockpit is a 5.2-litre, naturally aspirated V10 producing around 572bhp, with a 0-62mph time of 3.6 seconds.

Removing the roof of a car can often add extra weight, yet Lamborghini has been able to maintain the Huracan's dry weight of 1509kg. Its fabric roof can be raised and lowered in 17 seconds, and can be activated at speeds up to 30mph.

Lamborghini currently offers four, core Huracan models - two coupes and two Spyders. However, Auto Express has recently spied a more hardcore Huracan undergoing testing at the Nürburgring, saying "the car is completely camouflaged, but big changes can clearly be seen".

There's no word on pricing as of yet, but expect it to cost more than the £160,000 needed for a rear-wheel drive Huracan coupe. The rear-wheel drive Huracan Spyder is expected to go on sale in January 2017.
