The 2019 Premier League summer transfer window has closed with clubs making additions to their squads ahead of the first round of fixtures this weekend.
According to a study by Deloitte’s Sports Business Group EPL clubs spent £1.41bn in the window, falling narrowly short of the record set in summer 2017 (£1.43bn).
Eleven clubs also broke their individual player transfer records in this summer’s transfer window.

Deadline day saw £170m spent by Premier League clubs, £40m less than the record of £210m in summer 2017. The biggest deals saw Alex Iwobi leave Arsenal for Everton and Ismaïla Sarr join Watford from Rennes.

The biggest sale on deadline day saw Romelu Lukaku leave Manchester United for Inter Milan in a deal that could be worth up to £73.75m.

Alex Iwobi: Arsenal to Everton Transfer fee: up to £34m The Toffees have secured the Nigeria international on a five-year deal. Everton boss Marco Silva said: “Alex was one of our main targets for this window and I believe he is a fantastic signing for Everton. He is a direct and skilful winger and attacking midfielder who always works very hard for his team.”
Ryan Sessegnon: Fulham to Tottenham Transfer fee: £25m Teenager Sessegnon finally secured a move to Spurs after long being linked with the north London club. After the left-sided player signed a five-year deal Tottenham said in a statement: “We are delighted to announce the signing of Ryan Sessegnon from Fulham. The 19-year-old has signed a contract with the club until 2025 and will wear the number 19 shirt.”
Giovani Lo Celso: Real Betis to Tottenham Transfer deal: one-season loan (option to make permanent) Lo Celso, another long-time target, has signed on loan for one season and The Guardian reports that the 23-year-old’s move will be made permanent for £60m should Spurs qualify for the Champions League.
David Luiz: Chelsea to Arsenal Transfer fee: £8m Brazilian defender Luiz has made a shock switch across London and signed a two-year contract with the Gunners. Arsenal boss Unai Emery worked with the 32-year-old at Paris Saint-Germain and said: “David has huge experience and I look forward to working with him again. He is a well known player and adds to our defensive strength.”
Kieran Tierney: Celtic to Arsenal Transfer fee: £25m Scottish left-back Tierney competed a £25m move and said it was the “hardest decision” of his life. The 22-year-old said: “It’s a hard decision to leave a club that you love so much. People need to know that.”
Ismaïla Sarr: Rennes to Watford Transfer fee: £30m Watford have broken their club transfer record to sign Senegal forward Sarr on a five-year deal. The 22-year-old said: “It’s a real pleasure to join this club. It was my dream to play in England and I’m really excited to be here and to have signed for Watford. It was a dream for many years to play in this country because of the intensity and speed of the game. That is the way I play so it’s perfect for me.”
Dennis Praet: Sampdoria to Leicester City Transfer fee: £18m Belgium international midfielder Praet has signed a five-year deal with the Foxes. He becomes Leicester’s fourth signing of the summer after James Justin, Ayoze Pérez and Youri Tielemans.
Andy Carroll: West Ham to Newcastle United Transfer fee: free Striker Carroll has returned to his boyhood club on a one-year deal. The 30-year-old, who scored 33 goals for the Magpies in his first spell, said: “It feels very good. My friends and family are here, and it’s the club that I support - it is home.”
Danny Drinkwater: Chelsea to Burnley Transfer deal: loan until 6 January Drinkwater’s Chelsea nightmare has ended, for now, after securing a loan move to Burnley until January. The 29-year-old, a Premier League title winner with Leicester City in 2016, made only 12 appearances during his two-year spell at Stamford Bridge.
Romelu Lukaku: Manchester United to Inter Milan Transfer fee: up to £73.75m The biggest sale on deadline day saw Belgian striker Lukaku leave Old Trafford for the San Siro. After signing a contract until 2024 he said: “Inter were the only club I wanted, because Inter is not for everyone. I’m here to bring the Nerazzurri back to the top.”
