£1.27bn: Liverpool are top of the table - for most valuable squad in Europe

Liverpool are top and Manchester City are second - sound familiar? It’s not just the Premier League table where the Reds have an advantage over the Sky Blues...

According to research by the CIES Football Observatory Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are top of European football’s squad valuation league with an aggregate value of €1.4bn (£1.27bn).

Man City are second (€1.36bn/£1.23bn) while La Liga rivals FC Barcelona (€1.17bn/£1.06bn) and Real Madrid (€1.1bn/£1bn) are third and fourth respectively.

The squads from Chelsea, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Atletico Madrid, Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus make up the top ten.

Before the coronavirus outbreak saw English football postponed until April Liverpool held a 25-point lead over Man City at the top of the Premier League.

Once the season resumes Klopp’s men will be within two victories of winning their first league title in 30 years.

How the research works

The CIES Football Observatory study ranks clubs from the five major European leagues according to the value on the transfer market of players under contract.

CIES said: “The analysis takes into account the 20 players per club with the highest values as per the algorithm exclusively developed by the CIES Football Observatory research team. With an aggregated value of €1.4bn, Liverpool heads the table.

“Jurgen Klopp’s team outranks Manchester City, the two Spanish giants [Barcelona and Real Madrid] and Chelsea. The valuation of the latter team [Chelsea] has strongly increased thanks to the outbreak of many young talents following the transfer ban imposed by Fifa to the London club.”
