Premier League fixtures 2016-17: Ten key dates for the diary

Euro 2016 is in full swing, the Rio Olympics are still more than a month away and England's Test series against Pakistan has yet to begin - but football fans are already planning for next season.

The Premier League fixtures for 2016-17 have been released. Here are ten key dates for your diary:

Hull City vs Leicester City, 13 August

The season gets underway on the second Saturday in August and the champions begin their title defence with a trip to newly promoted Hull. It will be only the third time the sides have met in the top flight, but Hull knocked Leicester out of the League Cup last season. Also on the opening weekend, Arsenal take on Liverpool at the Emirates.

Manchester United vs Manchester City, 10 September

Jose Mourinho begins his United career away at Bournemouth while his City counterpart Pep Guardiola gets underway with a home game against Sunderland. But the first big game for both men- and the first truly titanic clash of the season - is a Manchester derby at Old Trafford on 10 September, when "The Disease" finally arrives in the Premier League.

Arsenal v Chelsea, 24 September

New Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has been handed a hectic start to life in the Premier League, with a London derby against West Ham on the opening day and a visit from Liverpool in week five. But those are both home games; his biggest early test looks to be a short trip to north London to take on Arsenal in September.

Liverpool vs Man Utd, 15 October

How will Mourinho prepare for United's trip to Liverpool, one of the bitterest clashes of the season? He has a poor record against Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, beating him only once in five attempts, and the Reds helped usher him to the Chelsea exit with a 3-1 win last season.

Chelsea vs Man Utd, 22 October

A week later, Mourinho will be centre stage once again as he takes Man United to his old stomping ground, Stamford Bridge. How will the Chelsea fans react to the return of the Special One and can he get one over the club that fired him?

Arsenal vs Tottenham, 5 November

The first north London derby of the season comes on Guy Fawkes Night and there are likely to be fireworks at the Emirates. The game could be crucial to both sides' hopes of a title push and Arsenal will be particularly anxious not to find themselves playing catch-up so early in the season.

Man Utd vs Arsenal, 19 November

Another week and yet another storyline involving Mourinho, as Arsenal travel to Old Trafford. It's widely acknowledged that the heat had gone out of this fixture in recent seasons, but with two managers who despise each other at the helm, there should be plenty of bite in this match.

Southampton vs Everton, 26 November

New Everton boss Ronald Koeman has inherited a Toffees side with lots of potential but in need of a lift. Who knows where they will be come November, but the manager can be sure of a hot reception when he returns to the south coast to take on his old club Southampton, who were not best pleased when he walked out on them.

Everton vs Liverpool, 17 December

Koeman will face another tough test in the first Merseyside derby of the season. It will be more than six years since Everton last beat Liverpool by the time this game kicks off and the fans will be desperate to for a win, with the aggregate score of the last five derbies standing at 10-2.

Man City vs Arsenal, 17 December

On the same day as the Merseyside clash, Guardiola welcomes Arsene Wenger to the Etihad. Many Arsenal fans wanted the City boss to take over at the Emirates and will not relish the possibility of seeing their side outplayed by a Guardiola team.

West Ham v Tottenham Hotspur, 6 May

The Hammers begin life at the Olympic Stadium on 20 August with a visit from Bournemouth. Their first full London derby comes when Arsenal visit in December, while they must wait until early May to take on Spurs, who believe they should have been given the right to play at the ground.

The season ends on 21 May, with Arsenal hosting Everton and Leicester, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United all playing at home, with Spurs and Man City away. The BBC carries the full fixture list.
