So much for that rebrand. The Texas Republican Party on Saturday signed off on its new platform, one that notably includes support for "reparative therapy" aimed at turning gays straight.
The provision says the party recognizes "the legitimacy and efficacy" of "treatment for those patients seeking healing and wholeness from their homosexual lifestyle." Though the plank sparked a mini-controversy when it was first proposed weeks ago, it never came up for debate Saturday among the 7,000 delegates, according to the Associated Press.
The American Psychological Association maintains that homosexuality is not a mental disorder, and claims conversion therapy efforts are borne of "societal ignorance and prejudice."
