New Hampshire newspaper recants Christie endorsement: 'Boy, were we wrong'
Three months ago, before any votes had been cast or caucuses organized for the 2016 election, the New Hampshire Union Leader endorsed New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie for the Republican nomination. Christie was the best choice "for our safety, our future," the headline declared; he was a "solid, pro-life conservative" who "believes in what he says because he has a strong set of conservative values."
Fast forward to present day. Christie placed sixth in the Granite State primary on Feb. 9, dropped out of the race the next day, and then decided last week to endorse Donald Trump, a man he had repeatedly declared unfit for the top job. Needless to say, many balked at Christie's endorsement — including the Union Leader.
In an editorial published Monday, the New Hampshire newspaper stated bluntly, "Boy, were we wrong." It continued to disavow its support for Christie:
