Newly minted British Prime Minister Theresa May named Boris Johnson, the former London mayor and ardent Brexiteer, as her government's foreign secretary. Johnson's appointment was one in a line of many Wednesday evening, after Queen Elizabeth II officially accepted David Cameron's resignation and confirmed May as the country's new leader.
Johnson's appointment means he will be tasked with representing Britain abroad and also play a major role in negotiating the country's exit from the European Union. While Johnson is well-known, BBC reports that this will be the first time that he holds a "full cabinet post." The appointment marks a big comeback for Johnson just weeks after Conservative Party leaders said he "ripped the Tory Party apart" by pulling out of the leadership contest to succeed David Cameron.
In her other appointments, May named former defense secretary Liam Fox to the role of international trade minister and MP David Davis as secretary of state for exiting the European Union, both new roles created to steer Britain in the wake of the Brexit referendum.
