UC Berkeley student, 20, confirmed dead in Nice attack
The University of California, Berkeley, announced Sunday that Nicolas Leslie, a 20-year-old student studying abroad in Nice, France, was among the 84 people killed Thursday during an attack targeting people celebrating Bastille Day.
"This is tragic, devastating news," UC Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas Dirks said in a statement. "All of us in the UC Berkeley family — both here on campus and around the world — are heartbroken to learn that another promising young student has been lost to senseless violence. I join Nick's parents, friends, and the entire campus community in condemning this horrific attack, and in mourning the loss of one of our own."
Leslie, an environmental sciences major from Del Mar, California, was one of 85 students participating in an entrepreneurship program in Nice. Three other Berkeley students were injured in the attack — a 21-year-old man whose leg was broken remains hospitalized, while a 23-year-old man who sustained a broken leg and a 20-year-old women who suffered a broken foot have been released. The FBI notified Berkeley about Leslie's death on Sunday. Two weeks ago, an 18-year-old Berkeley sophomore, Tarishi Jain, was killed in a terrorist attack at a restaurant in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
