Despite Democrats capturing control of the House of Representative, President Trump appears to see the 2018 midterms as an affirmation of his presidency.
On Twitter Tuesday, Trump declared that the election was a "Big Victory" and that he has received "so many Congratulations" from foreign nations, who "were waiting me out, and hoping, on Trade Deals." In another tweet, he suggested that the election results look great for him because those who embraced his policies did well but "those that did not, say goodbye!"
A variety of candidates who embraced Trump enthusiastically did win this year, including Florida's Republican governor-elect, Ron DeSantis. Others, however, suffered defeats, including the Republican nominee for Kansas governor, Kris Kobach, a close ally of the president who headed his commission to investigate voter fraud and received Trump's endorsement in the primaries over the sitting Republican governor. While many races have not yet been called, Democrats have so far secured at least 219 seats in the House, enough to win the majority and allow them to place checks on Trump, as well as potentially subpoena his tax returns. Republicans will retain at least a 51-seat majority in the Senate.
