Massive data leak exposes personal information for hundreds of German politicians

The German government is investigating a data leak that exposed the personal information of hundreds of politicians online, The Associated Press reports.

Information including cell phone numbers and personal addresses were reportedly posted on Twitter through an account that has since been suspended and that began releasing the data in December; even though the leak began before Christmas, it only recently started to attract attention.

No "politically sensitive documents" have apparently been leaked, although some private letters and personal chats were posted, some of which are "especially painful," a reporter who reviewed them told The Guardian. German Chancellor Angela Merkel was reportedly a target, and had written correspondences as well as an email and fax number posted.

The leak seems to have hit politicians from all parties with one exception, as CBS News reports: the far-right Alternative for Germany party. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.
