There will be a December Democratic debate after all

Los Angeles, we have a debate.

After a labor dispute threatened Thursday's December debate among Democratic presidential candidates, the DNC announced Tuesday the event would proceed as planned at Loyola Marymount University. Unite Here Local 11, which represents hospitality workers at the school, reached a tentative agreement with food service provider Sodexo and agreed to host the event, the union said in a Tuesday statement.

Loyola Marymount hospitality employees have been striking against food service provider Sodexo since March. Local 11 informed Democratic candidates last week about the strike and, one by one, they all said they'd boycott the debate to avoid crossing the union's picket line. With moving the debate not an option, Democratic National Committee Chair Tom Perez quickly started trying to resolve the dispute, using his experience as former Labor Secretary to his advantage. Local 11 acknowledged Perez and the DNC's roles in reaching the resolution, which includes "a 25 percent increase in compensation" and "a 50 percent drop in health care costs," per its statement.

The Democratic National Committee has already faced a union challenge to this debate, deciding in early November to pull it from UCLA over a union's three-year boycott on speakers at the school. It announced the debate was moving to Loyola Marymount a few days later.
