Cowboys reportedly hire former Packers head coach Mike McCarthy
"America's Team" has a new head coach.
In what appeared to be a very difficult decision for him, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on Sunday officially informed the team's former head coach Jason Garrett that his contract wouldn't be renewed after the team underachieved in 2019, finishing 8-8 and missing the playoffs. And he found a replacement pretty quickly.
Jones is reportedly set to bring Mike McCarthy to the sideline in Dallas. McCarthy spent 13 seasons as the head coach of another iconic franchise, the Green Bay Packers, where he guided the team to nine playoff appearance and a Super Bowl title in 2010. ESPN notes McCarthy was instrumental in developing Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers into one of the game's best signal-callers, and Dallas certainly hopes he can do the same for the young and talented Dak Prescott, who made strides this season.

It looks like Jones was set on hiring a veteran coach to lead the team, which certainly has the talent to get back in the playoffs last year — he reportedly only interviewed McCarthy and Marvin Lewis, the long-time former head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals before settling on the former. So far, the hire is getting the stamp of approval, but it's worth pointing out McCarthy's tenure in Green Bay ended on a bad note, and he's received some criticism for his in-game decision-making in the past, particularly when it comes to clock management.
