Hosni Mubarak, Egypt's leader for nearly 30 years until his ouster in 2011 amid an Arab Spring popular uprising, has died, Egyptian state TV said Tuesday. He was 91. Mubarak was Egypt's longest-serving leader in 150 years, and his violent crackdown on the protests led to his arrest and life imprisonment. He was released in 2017 after a higher court acquitted him of most charges, and he underwent surgery weeks ago. Mubarak was a staunch U.S. ally and guardian of Egypt's peace deal with Israel, but his long reign was marred by graft and human rights abuses.
