The Decathlon: Lewis Hamilton could stay in F1 for five more years
Ten things from the world of sport on Monday 3 June
1. Five more years for Lewis?
Lewis Hamilton revealed that he could stay in Formula 1 for another five years.
The five-time world champion, who is chasing Michael Schumacher’s record of seven titles, was interviewed by David Letterman for the Netflix series My Next Guest Needs No Introduction.
Speaking to Letterman during filming last year, Hamilton said: “Michael retired when he was 38 - I’m 33 [now 34]. So... I mean in my mind I can definitely do another five years.

“I am ridiculously determined to win. What really drives me, and I feel that somewhat the people I race against may lack, is that fire.
“I’ve got this opportunity, and I could easily let go of it right now, but I feel like I would be squandering it if I didn’t continue to improve, grow and push.
“I’ve got to keep going for as long as I can basically, until I’m not enjoying it.”
2. Kane aims to end trophy drought
England captain Harry Kane wants to end his season on a high by lifting the Uefa Nations League trophy this week in Portugal. The Three Lions take on the Netherlands in the semi-finals on Thursday and Kane said: “It’s a new tournament, but it’s still a chance to win a trophy in an England shirt, and 1966 [the year England won their only World Cup] was a long time ago. We’re going to try and take full advantage. We all want to win trophies and have the experience of sharing that with the group and the fans, so it’s a huge incentive.”

3. Van Gaal: De Ligt should sign for City
Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal believes that Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt should sign for Manchester City. Dutch defender De Ligt has been linked with United, Juventus and Barcelona, but Van Gaal said: “He could play at Barcelona, but he could play for Manchester City also, and in that case I would choose Pep Guardiola over Lionel Messi.”

4. Hearn: Joshua may not recover
Anthony Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn fears that the British boxer may not recover from his shock defeat against Andy Ruiz Jr in New York. A rematch clause in the fight contract will be activated and Hearn said: “Great fighters come back, but some may never be the same. The future will show how Anthony responds. He must win that rematch because there is nothing after that.”

5. Liverpool to reward Klopp
Liverpool players, staff and fans celebrated the club’s Champions League final victory with a huge parade throughout the city on Sunday. The Reds beat Tottenham 2-0 in the Madrid final and according to reports manager Jurgen Klopp is set to be rewarded with a new long-term contract at Anfield. Liverpool’s owners are ready to offer German boss Klopp a salary worth £10m a year.

6. Konta to face Stephens at Roland-Garros
British No.1 Johanna Konta will take on Sloane Stephens tomorrow in the French Open quarters-finals. After beating 23rd seed Donna Vekic in the last 16 on Sunday, Konta told the BBC that she’s enjoying how unpredictable the Roland-Garros grand slam is. She said: “It’s nice for people to also enjoy matches where nothing’s a given and it can be unpredictable. That’s the beauty of sport, to have battles where you’re not sure what the end result is going to be until it happens.”
7. Lee6 wins the US Women’s Open
South Korean golfer Jeongeun Lee6 secured the 2019 US Women’s Open title by one shot at the Country Club of Charleston. She said: “I felt pretty nervous on 16, 17 and 18. I know I made two bogeys but I tried the best I could. All my shots were pretty good. I was calm because I knew I could play well. Throughout the year I couldn’t imagine coming this far. I feel proud and I worked so hard.”
8. Warriors level finals
The Golden State Warriors beat the Toronto Raptors 109-104 to level the NBA Finals at 1-1. The best-of-seven series will see the Warriors host the Raptors in game three in Oakland on Thursday (2am BST, live on Sky Sports).
9. Neville to step down after World Cup
England netball head coach Tracey Neville will step down from the role after the World Cup in July. The 42-year-old told the BBC: “I hope to get an opportunity to lead again in the future. My ambition to have a family is something I want to commit to after the World Cup. To the staff and players, past and present, you have challenged me in every way possible and I am eternally grateful for your commitment and support.”
10. Fancy dress dig at Warner and Smith
It’s early days in the Cricket World Cup but already there is a strong contender for the tournament’s best fancy dress costume.
Two spectators at Bristol on Saturday were dressed as sandpaper, a dig at the Australian pair Steve Smith and David Warner.
They were banned last year for their part in the ball-tampering scandal and the English fans have promised they won’t let them forget it during the World Cup.
Not that Warner seemed bothered, with his unbeaten 89 easing the Aussies to a seven-wicket win against Afghanistan.
