The UK has voted to leave the 28-member European Union, BBC News and other British broadcasters have projected. With about 70 counting areas outstanding, of 382 total, the Leave camp has 52 percent of the vote, or 13.3 million votes, while the Remain side has 48 percent.
As the vote shifted in the Leave camp's favor, UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage declared June 23 a new independence day for Great Britain, one he hopes will bring down the EU. "The dawn is breaking on an independent United Kingdom!" he said. "If the predictions now are right, this will be a victory for real people, for ordinary people, a victory for decent people!"
