Conversations with Christie's: Auctions made easy
This autumn, hotelier JW Marriott hosts a series of live and virtual events to help make the best of any bid, whatever is under the hammer
Buying at auction can be a minefield, but a new programme of activity from Christie's and JW Marriott Hotels & Resorts aims to demystify the experience.
Conversations with Christie's comprises a series of live events, online articles and videos that will offer a unique insight into different areas of the vintage market through the eyes of experts.
The events, which are open to guests staying at the group's hotels, will each tackle a particular category of collectibles and be hosted by a specialist from Christie's. The series begins on 5 September at JW Marriott Grosvenor House, London, where Matthew Rubinger, the auction house's international director for Asia, EMERI (Europe, the Middle East, Russia, India) and Hong Kong, will share his expertise as to what makes a handbag valuable. Attendees will also be able to preview pieces from upcoming sales, including those from Hermes and Chanel.

Global events include an in-depth look at baseball memorabilia at the JW Marriott Chicago on 27 September, while on 18 November, guests at the JW Marriott Hong Kong can learn more about high-end timepieces, such as those from Rolex and Patek Philippe.
Those who can't attend will have plenty of opportunity to brush up on their knowledge online. A number of exclusive interviews with leading Christie's experts, filmed at its US salerooms and office at New York's Rockefeller Plaza, will be available to watch on the JW Marriott website and via the online destination-and-lifestyle publication Marriott Traveler from early September.
