Jim Carrey is facing legal action over the death of his ex-girlfriend Cathriona White last year.

Irish make-up artist White, 30, died after overdosing on prescription drugs, with her death officially ruled a suicide. Now her estranged husband, Mark Burton, is suing Carrey for wrongful death.

Burton alleges the actor used his "immense wealth and celebrity status" to illegally acquire the drugs that killed White and "took steps to conceal and obfuscate his involvement and culpability in Ms White's untimely and tragic death". He is seeking unspecified damages and compensation.

Carrey has vowed to fight the legal challenge, saying it would be "easy" for him to reach a settlement, but "that there are some moments in life when you have to stand up and defend your honour against the evil in this world".

He added: "I will not tolerate this heartless attempt to exploit me or the woman I loved. I really hope that someday soon people will stop trying to profit from this and let her rest in peace."

Carrey and White, who are believed to have met in 2012, had an on-and-off romance and were not in a relationship when she was found dead in her Los Angeles home in September 2015.

"She had broken up with Carrey a week before and left a suicide note addressed to the actor saying she was 'just not for this world'," The Guardian reports.

Carrey, who was a pallbearer at White's funeral in County Tipperary, described her as "truly kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil, to whom loving and being loved was all that sparkled".
