Design desirables at the Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair
Expect to find the unexpected at this eminent London event, which combines the chic with the unique to create a veritable trove of treasures
Antiques fairs are often overwhelming – it can be hard to visualise how the plum purchase you've picked will ultimately fit in your home. The Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair, in London's Battersea Park, was founded in 1985 as a solution. Bringing together unusual and unique pieces under one roof, it displays them in a creative way that demonstrates how well-chosen objects can enhance interior design.
The fair is held three times a year and the autumn edition returns to its sylvan setting from 27 September to 2 October. The largest yet, it will see 160 exhibitors showcasing a diverse range of antiques from the UK and continental Europe, as well as further-flung corners of the globe, such as Brazil, the Middle East and Asia. The exhibitors' stands are styled as rooms, providing plenty of practical inspiration and innovative ideas that can be implemented at home.
Each event sees the foyer of the exhibition space transformed into a themed display and, this time, the theme is Scandi Days and Nordic Nights. Here, some of the best examples of 18th- and 19th-century traditional folk furniture and classical Gustavian styles will sit alongside the angular lines of mid-century Scandinavian pieces, demonstrating how the vintage and modern can be successfully combined to create a chic, contemporary look.
