Auction round-up: January’s treasured lots
Covetable New Year finds include a rare first-edition and a quirky Soviet teapot
You’ll find an eclectic selection of art and antiques and collectable pieces aplenty at this month's specialist auctions.
First up is London fine art and antiques auction house Roseberys, with a sale at its salerooms in Lambeth on 7 January. Highlights include a 2014 oil-on-canvas painting of a white Bengal tiger by acclaimed British wildlife artist Pip McGarry (estimate £2,500-£3,000).
On 11 January, Salisbury-based Woolley & Wallis is holding a furniture, works of art and clocks sale. Featured lots include a pair of large 19th century Rococo-style giltwood mirrors (£5,000-£8,000), and a Regency mahogany and giltwood centre table (£1,500-£2,000) from the private collection of UK theatre producer Sir Michael Codron.

More fine furniture is to be found at Batemans' sale of fine art, antiques and collectables in Stamford, Lincolnshire, on 14 January, offering a 19th century pietra dura table-top on a mahogany base (£400-£600). In the "collectable" section, you'll find valuable memorabilia from musical greats, such as this Beatles Christmas Show souvenir programme, the front cover of which is signed by all four members (£2,000-£3,000).
Bamfords in Derby is holding a four-day fine art and antique sale from 17-20 January, featuring more than 1,600 pieces, including 150 from a single-owner collection, highlights of which include a Victorian agate and gilt brass walnut games box, containing De La Rue & Co playing cards, whist markers, "spade guinea" tokens and a pair of gilt brass bezique and cribbage boards (£200-£300).
Back in London, Chiswick Auctions is holding a printed books and manuscripts auction on 25 January. The sale features a number of interesting pieces, such as a signed portrait photograph of Russia's last tsarina, Alexandra (£800-£1,200), and a first edition of JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit (£2,000-£3,000).
On the same day, international auction house Lyon & Turnbull has a fine furniture & works of art sale at its Edinburgh showroom. Valuable items include a George III parcel gilt and red Japanned musical bracket clock (£10,000-£5,000) and a Soviet porcelain teapot by Sergey Chekhonin (£3,000-£5,000).
Finally, JS Fine Art will be holding a three-day country house sale, with auctions on 20, 21 and 28 January at its premises in Banbury. Included in the sale is a single-owner collection of antiquities and oddities, dating from the prehistoric era to the 20th century.
